Young prodigy of the famous Kirov ballet, Rudolf Nureyev is in Paris in June 1961 to perform on the stage of the Opera. Fascinated by the crazy Parisian nights and the artistic and cultural life of the capital, he became friends with Clara Saint, a young woman introduced to upscale circles. But the men of the KGB responsible for monitoring him do not look favorably at his “Western” associates and call him to order. Confronted with a terrible dilemma, Nureyev will have to make an irrevocable choice, which will upset his life forever. But who will get him into history?
Annoncé à l’automne 2015, Ralph Fiennes va finalement tourner son biopic sur le danseur Rudolf Noureev, The White Crow, cet été entre Saint-Pétersbourg et Paris.
Ce troisième film de Fiennes en tant que réalisateur rassemblera la russe Chulpan Khamatova (Luna Papa, Good Bye Lenin!, Under Electric Clouds), le jeune danseur Sergei Polunin (vu dans le clip signé David LaChapelle, “Take Me to Church” de Hozier) et la française Adèle Exarchopoulos. Elle interprétera Clara Saint, ex-fiancée du fils d’André Malraux, chorégraphe et amie du danseur qui l’aida à fuir la Russie et s’installer en France (elle révéla son rôle dans cette évasion il y a deux ans). Entre le danseur russe prodigieux et cette fille d’un peintre chilien réfugié à Paris, il n’y a rien eu d’autre qu’une histoire d’amitié, a-t-elle toujours affirmé.
The White Crow est l’adaptation de la biographie de Julie Kavanagh, Rudolf Nureyev: The Life, inédite en France. Le scénario de David Hare (The Hours, The Reader) se focalisera surtout sur le moment où Noureev passera à l’Ouest en 1961.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour star Adèle Exarchopoulos, Russian actress Chulpan Khamatova (Good Bye Lenin!) and dancers Sergei Polunin and Oleg Ivenko are to star in Ralph Fiennes’ Rudolf Nureyev drama The White Crow.
After an extensive search the production has settled on Russian dancer Ivenko to play iconic dancer Nureyev in the feature, which Fiennes will look to shoot on location in St Petersburg and Paris, including the iconic Mariinsky Theatre and the Palais Garnier, in summer 2017.
David Hare’s (The Hours) script, based on the biography Rudolf Nureyev: The Life by Julie Kavanagh, charts the iconic dancer’s famed defection from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him.
The script’s finale is set at Le Bourget airport in Paris and traces the dramatic day of the defection.
Exarchopoulos will play Parisian Clara Saint who helped choreograph her friend’s defection.
The film is developed by BBC Films and produced by Philomena producer Gabrielle Tana, who recently produced documentary Dancer, about prodigal talent Polunin.
Tana will produce through Magnolia Mae Productions alongside former Pathé executive François Ivernel (The Iron Lady) under his banner Montebello Productions.
Executive producers for BBC Films are Joe Oppenheimer and Beth Pattinson.
Fiennes said: “Ever since Julie Kavanagh gave me advance proofs of the early chapters of her biography of Nureyev, back in 1999, I have been inspired and moved by the story of his student years and his decision to defect to the West. This is a story of an uncompromising spirit, of homeland and ideologies that restrict, and of friendship.
“It is equally, a tale about the life and ballet culture he left behind in Russia. We have spent a very long time looking for our Rudolf Nureyev and are thrilled to have found the exceptional talents of dancer and actor Oleg Ivenko for this part.”
Tana commented: “I’m thrilled to be working with Ralph on our third project together. With his insightful vision, David Hare’s magnificent screenplay and our exceptionally talented cast – I am excited to bring these important chapters of Nureyev’s life to the screen. This has long been a passion project for me and I can’t be more delighted to be working with HanWay on this film.”
Gabrielle Stewart, HanWay MD, noted: “The whole team at HanWay has been seduced with the depth of preparation, passion and vision Ralph Fiennes is bringing to this project. He has taken the time to find his perfect Nureyev in Oleg, and with his strong production team behind him, is getting access to unique locations. The White Crow will be pure cinema.”
Volatile former Royal Ballet star Nureyev, whose stage partners included Margot Fonteyn and Yvette Chauviré, died aged 54 from an AIDS-related complication.
Fiennes is represented by Simon Beresford at Dalzell & Beresford and Bryan Lourd and Joel Lubin at CAA.
